  • 2010 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry
  • Significance: The original one-story, one room frame building of 1904 with a gable roof stands on a stone foundation. It was subsequently enlarged into a house in 1957 with the addition of bedrooms, bathroom, and garage. The building sits on a generally level lot along Route 381 just north of the present-day entrance to Fallingwater. The immediate area around the house is defined by the remains of snake fence which once extended all along the Fallingwater property. The school was part of the vanished, but once thriving community of Bear Run which was a stop along the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and home to a George Stickel's general store and small collection of farms. Other activity included a logging operation with a sawmill, ice house, butcher, and blacksmith shop. There were small-scale clay and coal mines. Bear Run also served as a vacation destination to Pittburgers and home to a Masonic Country Club...
